“Cool” Community Places to Take Your Kids on the Weekend

Posted on Blog, Family and Home, Fort Lauderdale August 27, 2014

Even though the kids have gone back to school, you can still plan fun activities for the weekend. If you’re looking for something new, you should utilize your community’s resources. Museums, libraries and zoos all host activities for children and families.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, which is located in West Palm Beach, hosts Night at the Museum the last Friday night of the month with extended hours, from 6pm to 9pm. Each event has a different theme, and kids can enjoy different activities, exhibits and shows. There are fun activities every month, like costume contests, giveaways and animal encounters, so don’t miss it! Check out this month’s schedule here.

If you’re in Broward County, the Museum of Discovery and Science offers tons of neat activities for kids. There are Everglades, minerals and rocket exhibits that will intrigue children. The museum also offers limited time exhibits, like this month’s Goose Bumps, the Science of Fear exhibit. It’s interactive and includes the Fear Challenge Course, where kids are safely challenged by things we all fear, like heights and insects. There’s also the interactive Fear Lab, which invites children to explore the brain receptors that drive fear. The Museum of Discovery and Science also boats an IMAX theater, but it’s closed until October 13th for renovations. Learn more about what the museum has to offer here.

For Miami-Dade residents, the Miami Museum of Science is a great place to take the kids on the weekend. The observatory and planetarium will easily get your children interested in space and science. The observatory is home to two telescopes and is open from 8pm to 10pm. The planetarium has daily shows, surround sound, video projection and laser shows. You can catch a free planetarium show the first Friday of the month at 7pm, so bring the kids for a fun Friday night! The Miami Museum of Science also has a wildlife center and various exhibits. A new location is currently under construction and will open in 2015.

The library is a great place in the community for your kids. Palm Beach County Libraries continually have events and activities for you and your children. There are arts and crafts like origami classes, music programs and singalongs, and story time.

Broward County Libraries host events and activities for kids of all different ages. Join various branches in story time, homework help and after school activities. View each branch’s event calendar here

Miami-Dade Public Libraries also host children’s activities. Various branches participate in storytelling and arts and crafts. Their calendar is updated frequently here.

Zoos are always a fun place to take the kids for some weekend fun. If you’re closer to Palm Beach, check out the Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society. There are daily shows, like bird shows and feeding encounters with zookeepers. The zoo also offers stroller safaris for toddlers two and under. And if you wanted the whole family to get involved, try a family overnight adventure! The zoo also participates in conservation efforts. Learn more about the zoo’s activities and conservation efforts here.

If you’re closer to Miami, bring the kids to Zoo Miami for a day with wildlife. They also host zoo camp, sleepovers and other education programs. There are also fun events like Spooky Zoo Night for Halloween from October 24 to the 31. You can also bring the kids to Zoo Boo, where kids are invited to wear their costumes and go trick-or-treating from October 25 and 26. Check out all Zoo Miami’s seasonal events here.
